May Events in Austin

It’s May in Austin, and things are heating up, literally and figuratively!

While May is traditionally a busy month with graduations, Mother’s Day, and Memorial Day, make sure you save some time to attend some of these uniquely-Austin events and festivals.

Cine Las Americas International Film Festival

5/1/19 – 5/5/19

This one-of-a-kind film festival celebrates an under-represented group in movies – Latinos in the U.S. and the rest of the world. These films, made by or about Latinos, will be screened at locations across the city. There’s a lot to choose from – 114 titles from 25 countries!

For more information regarding ticket prices and the schedule, visit the festival’s website.

Do you want to attend the festival, but you need a ride to all the various screening locations? The professional drivers of R&R Limo and Bus are ready to help. We will make sure you don’t miss a minute of any of the films.

Pecan Street Spring Arts Festival

5/4/19 – 5/5/19

East Sixth Street

We know that people across the country associate Austin with festivals. This has been true for over 30 years. This City of Austin staple event, the Pecan Street Spring Arts Festival features music, vendors, artists, and crafts. It is a family-friendly event, and it is free to attend.

But why would an event, called the Pecan Street festival, be held on East 6th Street?

When the city was first designed, the east/west streets were intended to be named after trees. For a time, 6th Street was called, you guessed it, Pecan Street.

And now you know . . .

The Rookie Tri

5/5/19

Walter E. Long Metropolitan Park

Have you wanted to try competing in a triathlon, but you don’t want to look like a slowpoke? Maybe you are afraid that the volunteers at the finish line would be gathering up their supplies while patiently waiting for you to finish.

The Rookie Tri is a 300-meter swim, 11.2-mile bike ride, and 2-mile run. And to encourage you to finish each event, there will be beer at the finish line!

West Austin Studio Tour

5/11/19 – 5/12/19 & 5/18/19 – 5/19/19

West Austin

Make time during the second and third weekends of May to support local, Austin artists. Our West Austin Studio Tour is a free, self-guided event that will allow you to meet local artists and learn about their techniques and inspirations.

If local art is important to you, show your support by attending this event. Keep the art scene thriving in our local community. Visit the tour’s website to learn about the hundreds of pieces displayed.

Hot Luck Festival

5/23/19 – 5/26/19

The Hot Luck: Live Food & Music Festival returns to Austin on Memorial Day Weekend. The food festival starts on Friday, with the Hi, How Are You? At Franklin Barbecue. Saturday’s food event is Al Fuego at Wild Onion Ranch, and Sunday’s Coupe de Grille will be held at Austin Speed Shop.

If you’re more interested in the music scene, you can purchase individual concert tickets through the weekend at Barracuda, Antone’s Nightclub, and Mohawk Austin.

See Leftover Salmon with Mamafesta, Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band and Sour Bridges, and Harlem with Flesh Lights and The Stacks. Visit the festival website to see the complete schedule.

If you are into food and music, buy the Whole Enchilada Pass and enjoy both. And then, make it easy on yourself and hire a private car and driver for the weekend. The Hot Luck Fest events will be held all over the city. Feel free to have a few drinks at Wild Onion Ranch before you head over to the concert at Antone’s. We will get you there safely.
